Gimme a “W”, an “I”, a “N!” What do you get?

They came. They cheered. They won.

The Halifax Running Club gained 91 per cent of the votes for best water stop at the 2013 Sole Sisters Women’s Race for their “cheerleading squad.”

This is the second year running the Halifax Running Club (HRC) snagged the prestigious water stop trophy, which will stay in the club’s possession for another year.

Heart & Sole Running Club and the Halifax Trail Running Club also ran water stops at Sole Sisters this year and made bold attempts to secure the award.

But the 11-member HRC  cranked up the Lady Gaga tunes, squeezed themselves into burgundy cheerleader outfits and shook their pom-poms with abandon to regain the honour of best water stop.

Women runners were surprised and then amused when they encountered the middle-aged cheer squad in wigs, shaking for all they were worth. Many stopped mid-run to take photos or videos of both the cheerleaders and themselves with the HRC  at the four kilometre mark of the race.

Just goes to show: behind every beautiful running woman is a man working a water stop – some of them dressed in cheerleading costumes, but…uh, men, nonetheless (we’re pretty sure).

Seriously, Sole Sisters runs partially on the support of the men in the running community and we’re grateful for their involvement
